Arizona Quail Hunting Log January 2005 15 January 2005 - Hunting Gambles Quail - Fountain Hills Arizona
Pistol Pointing Gambles Quail - Fountain Hills Arizona - January 2005 Today hunting started out quite slow. We went to Fountain Hills around the McDowell Mountain Park. We walked for about an hour then Pistol busted a covey at the base of a hill. It was very disapointing but I'm not sure she ever made game as when I saw the covey bust she was running towards me. The birds took off and we never did see any of them again. We walked for about another hour without seeing another bird so we turned around and headed back for the truck. On the way back Doug and I seperated and I stayed down in a wash while he went up and over a few hills. Pistol busted another covey and this time I saw the general location one of the birds landed. I pointed Pistol in the direction of the bird and within 2 minutes she went on point. As I was fumbling for the camera Pistol took a step and the bird took off. We headed back pretty fast after that! When we reached the top of the hill where the truck was parked Pistol suddenly bolted as if she was chasing a rabbit or something then I saw the covey of birds running out in front of her. They all took off and I nicked Pistol into a stop. After that she turned it on. We went down a shallow ravine where we saw the birds go and Pistol went on point (pictured above) and I had time to take a picture before I shot the bird. We circled back around after looking for the bird I shot and she went on point in basically the same spot. This time no picture. I flushed a bird that was about 5 feet from the first and missed.
Pistol Pointing Gambles Quail - Fountain Hills Arizona - January 2005 Pistol was pretty much on fire for about the next 30 minutes as we circled around the top of the mountain. She pointed 4 singles and a double and looked pretty good every time. Because the birds were holding I took the time to take some pictures.
Pistol Pointing Gambles Quail - Fountain Hills Arizona - January 2005 Pistol pointed a double here. Unfortunately I didn't shoot a double. Shooting was off today. Pointing was on and it was a treat to see Pistol out there working hard.
Pistol Pointing Gambles Quail - Terra & Zeus Backing - Fountain Hills Arizona - January 2005 I saw Pistol (middle left behind bush) go on point but didn't get there in time to take a shot. The bird flushed as I was running over to her. She held until I got there and took a picture. Terra and Zeus were backing until I tried to move in front of Pistol to take another then they rushed in and Pistol also broke point.
Pistol Pointing Gambles Quail - Terra & Zeus - Fountain Hills Arizona - January 2005 This was the last productive point of the morning. I had a bird and Doug didn't so I let him walk in on the bird. Unfortunately as Doug came in so did Terra and Zeus blowing the back, and busting the bird. Doug nailed it before it flew 15 feet. Good shot. back to December or go to February |
