Arizona Quail Hunting Log October 2001 - February 2002
It all began some time during the 2001 Hunting Season in Queen Creek, Arizona We did a lot of hunting in the 2001-2002 season but not a lot of pictures were taken. My brother started hunting with us and we spent a lot of time hunting close to town with a few outings to Sonoita/Patagonia and the San Carlos Indian Reservation. This season we got into lots of Gambles and some Mearns quail. I didn't get into any Scaled quail this year.
Scout Pointing Gambles Quail Covey - Pilot Backing - Queen Creek - 2001 Season Here is a picture of Scouts first wild bird point. Pilot is backing. This was taken down by a canal in Queen Creek near Ocotillo Road. We used to get into a lot of birds there. On one trip we must have seen well over 100 birds come out of a group of trees in at least 3-4 waves. Lots of shoot by me but not one bird down. At the time I was using a antique 12-guage side by side that didn't work well...but I think it was the overwhelming excitement that caused me to miss so many times. ∞
Pilot with Porcupine Quills in his Face - Queen Creek - 2001 Season Today was a good day of hunting along the canal in Queen Creek. On the way back I lost sight of Pilot and when he re-apprered it was obvious he had been tangled up with a Porcupine. Notice the 2 quills under his nose, they make him look like he's a African Tribesman.
Mearns Quail Hunt - 24 November 2001 Right around Thanksgiving in 2001 we went down to Hog Canyon for my first Mearns Quail Hunt. I don't remember much of the hunt only that there were more birds down there during that first hunt then I have seen at any other time since and there were just about as many there when I left. Shooting Mearns Quail was nothing like shooting Gambles Quail. I remember loving the country and wishing I could live there. Still do. In the picture are Pilot (left) and Lacy (right). ∞
Pilot Pointing Gambles Quail - Mattie Backing - McDowell Mountain Park - January 2002 This was one of the first times Pilot pointed and actually stopped for long enough to let me take a picture. I'm pretty sure that we were able to go in and bust the covey, but memory doesn't serve me well. It was a proud day towards the end of the season. My old Shotgun and Some Other Guns - 2001 The shotgun I was hunting with was a heavy beast so before the 2001-2002 hunting season I went out and bought a old 1920 something shotgun from a used gun dealer. It was probably the worst thing I could have done to myself. I missed more birds, had more miss fires and was made fun of more then I'd like to admit. On one hunting trip only one barrel was shooting. So it made for lots of fun and lots of jokes. Although it was fun to have the old thing, I sold it and had a new gun for the 2002-2003 season. back to Hunt Log or go to 2002-2003 |
